Electronic DVIRs Officially Clarified in New 2026 Rule
Digital Pre-Trips are Now the Federal Standard
In a win for technology-forward fleets, the FMCSA finalized a rule on February 19, 2026, that clears up all remaining ambiguity regarding Electronic Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports (eDVIRs).
While many drivers have been using apps for inspections for years, the new rule explicitly states that digital signatures and electronic storage meet all federal safety requirements. The rule emphasizes that eDVIRs must be "producible within minutes" for a DOT auditor and should ideally be integrated with the vehicle's ELD system to ensure time-stamped accuracy.
This update also officially removes the requirement to carry physical spare fuses in the cab—a relic of the past for most modern trucks equipped with circuit breakers.
