Paper Medical Cards: The Final Phase-Out Deadline

Time is Up for Paper Medical Certificates

The era of the "pocket card" is finally coming to an end. As of January 10, 2026, the FMCSA's temporary waiver for paper-based medical reporting has expired.

The Digital-Only System: In 2026, all Medical Examiners are required to upload results directly to the National Registry. That data must then sync with your State Driver’s License Agency (SDLA).

Warning for Drivers: Do not assume the system worked! Check your Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) online. If your state shows you as "Medical Certified: NO," you can be placed out-of-service, even if you are holding a physical paper card in your hand. The digital record is now the only one that matters to law enforcement.
