Can I Drive Uber with a CDL?

TL;DR

Yes, you can drive Uber with a CDL. The catch is that Uber only asks for a standard driver's license, so your CDL doesn't unlock anything extra. What it does do is qualify you for commercial trucking jobs that usually pay 2 to 3 times what rideshare pays.

What License Does Uber Actually Require?

Uber asks drivers for one thing here: a valid standard driver's license. A CDL isn't on the list. You only legally need a Commercial Driver's License when you're operating vehicles over 26,001 lbs GVWR, vehicles built to carry 16 or more passengers, or vehicles hauling hazardous materials. A normal Uber ride (UberX, Uber Comfort, Uber XL) uses a personal vehicle that sits well below all of those thresholds. So your CDL won't disqualify you from driving Uber. It just isn't required.

Why CDL Holders Can Earn Far More Than Uber

If you've already got a CDL, rideshare is rarely the smartest way to use it. Here's what the commercial side pays instead:

  • Long-haul OTR trucking: $65,000 to $90,000 a year on average
  • Local delivery routes (Amazon, FedEx, UPS): $55,000 to $75,000 a year
  • Tanker and hazmat transport: $100,000+ a year
  • Owner-operator gross revenue: $100,000 to $200,000 a year
  • Uber driver average: $35,000 to $50,000 a year, and that's before expenses
