Question 1 of 5

You are at an intersection and make eye contact with another driver. What should you assume?

New York CDL permit test: what to expect

The written exam most people call the New York CDL permit test is the general knowledge test, and passing it is what gets you a commercial learner's permit rather than the license itself. You need 80% to pass, a federal standard that is the same in every state. The number of questions is set by New York, and our practice tests use the common 50-question format.

Once you hold the permit you have to keep it for at least 14 days before you are allowed to attempt the skills test, so it is worth sitting the written exam as early as you can. Practice below until you are clearing New York's standard comfortably rather than scraping it.

How to get a CDL in New York

To obtain a Commercial Driver's License in the New York, you must first pass the General Knowledge exam. Depending on the type of vehicle you intend to drive, additional endorsements like Air Brakes, Tanker, or Hazmat may be required.

  • Get a DOT medical exam and keep your medical certificate handy. Bring proof of identity to a DMV office to apply for a commercial learner permit.
  • Pass the written knowledge tests for the class and endorsements you want, right at the DMV counter. You need at least 80% on each one.
  • Once you pass, you get your commercial learner permit (CLP). You have to hold it for at least 14 days before you can take the road test.
  • Practice with a licensed CDL driver, then book and pass your CDL road test. The road test fee is $40, and you can pay it online through your MyDMV account or at the office.
  • Go back to the DMV after you pass to get your New York CDL issued.

5 New York CDL Practice Questions and Answers

Here are 5 sample New York general knowledge questions with the right answer and a quick explanation for each. Read through them, then take the quiz above to see how you do without looking.

1. You are at an intersection and make eye contact with another driver. What should you assume?

  • A. They will definitely yield the right-of-way to your commercial vehicle.
  • B. They have seen you but may still pull out in front of you. (correct answer)
  • C. They are legally signaling you to proceed first.
  • D. They are trying to challenge you to a race.

Why: Even if you make eye contact with another driver, you should never assume they will yield or act predictably. They may be looking right at you and still not truly 'see' your truck.

2. Why is bobtailing (driving a tractor without a trailer) potentially hazardous during acceleration?

  • A. The engine provides too much horsepower for the lightweight frame.
  • B. The steering becomes significantly heavier.
  • C. The tractor has very little weight over the drive axles, making the wheels prone to spinning. (correct answer)
  • D. The service brakes will lock up automatically.

Why: Without a trailer, a tractor has much less weight on the drive wheels. This lack of traction makes it very easy to spin the drive wheels during acceleration.

3. You see a pedestrian using a white cane or a guide dog. What does this indicate?

  • A. The pedestrian is a construction worker checking road levels.
  • B. The pedestrian is deaf and cannot hear your horn.
  • C. The pedestrian is blind or visually impaired and always has the right-of-way. (correct answer)
  • D. The pedestrian is conducting a traffic survey.

Why: A white cane or guide dog indicates a person who is blind or visually impaired. You must yield the right-of-way and use extreme caution when they are near the roadway.

4. What is the most important rule when communicating with a helper who is guiding you while backing?

  • A. Always use a two-way radio instead of hand signals.
  • B. The helper must stand directly behind the trailer at all times.
  • C. You and the helper must agree on a set of hand signals before you start backing. (correct answer)
  • D. The helper should only use verbal commands.

Why: Before you begin backing, you and your helper must agree on a common set of clear hand signals, especially the signal for 'stop'.

5. Why should you avoid driving over a piece of debris like an old muffler?

  • A. It could be a trap set by law enforcement.
  • B. It can be flipped up and damage your air lines, brake components, or tires. (correct answer)
  • C. It will immediately destroy your transmission.
  • D. It is illegal to remove debris from the highway yourself.

Why: Debris on the highway is a severe hazard. Heavy metal objects like mufflers can bounce up and tear out air lines, damage brake mechanisms, or blow out tires if run over.
