Liquid surge is the movement of liquid inside a partly filled tank, and it is the reason tankers handle unlike any other trailer. When you brake, the load keeps moving forward and pushes the vehicle with it. When you come out of a stop, it rolls back. In a turn or a lane change it slams sideways. The Tanker knowledge test spends more questions on this single behavior than on anything else, because it is what causes tanker crashes.
What the test asks about liquid surge
A tanker carries a high center of gravity and a load that will not stay still, which is a combination that rolls vehicles over. Surge can push you through an intersection after you thought you had stopped, and side-to-side surge during an evasive move can put a tank on its side at a speed that would be safe in a dry van. Understanding it is also what the smooth, gradual driving style expected of tanker drivers is built on.
Where drivers lose marks
- Believing baffles solve the problem. Baffled tanks slow front-to-back surge, but they do nothing about side-to-side movement, which is what causes rollovers.
- Not knowing what a smooth bore tank is. With no internal baffles at all, the surge is far stronger, and those tanks demand the gentlest braking and steering of anything on the road.
- Filling a tank completely. Liquids expand, so tanks are loaded with outage, meaning deliberate empty space. How much depends on the liquid and the temperature it is loaded at.
- Braking hard or steering sharply out of habit. Both set the load moving, and the vehicle follows it.
