Here's roughly how long each stage takes when you're working toward a CDL.
- CDL Learner's Permit (CLP): figure on 1 to 4 weeks of studying, plus 1 to 2 hours on test day
- CDL school and skills training: 3 to 6 weeks full-time, or up to 6 months if you go part-time
- Scheduling the CDL skills test: you have to wait 14 days after your CLP is issued
- The skills test itself (pre-trip, backing, road): 2 to 4 hours the day you test

- State scheduling backlogs. Some DMVs make you wait 2 to 8 weeks for a skills test slot
- Endorsements. Hazmat tacks on a TSA background check, which runs 4 to 8 weeks
- Flunking the permit test. Each retake usually costs you a week or more
