Check Your CDL School on the Federal Registry Before You Pay a Deposit

If you are about to hand money to a CDL school, stop and do one check first. It takes half a minute and it can save you thousands of dollars and months of your life.

The registry, and why it decides everything

Since February 2022, anyone getting a first CDL, upgrading to a higher class, or adding a school bus, passenger, or hazmat endorsement has to complete Entry-Level Driver Training from a provider listed on the federal Training Provider Registry. Training from a provider that is not listed does not count toward the federal requirement. It does not matter how good the instruction was or how much you paid.

The registry is public and searchable at tpr.fmcsa.dot.gov.

FMCSA has been clearing house

FMCSA has been removing providers from the registry for failing to meet federal standards, and has placed thousands more on notice for noncompliance with the training rules. AAMVA, the association that runs the CDL information system for FMCSA, published guidance telling state DMVs to steer customers toward checking the registry before they enroll or show up for a skills test. Its own note counts 4,000 providers placed on notice for noncompliance.

The problems being found are not paperwork technicalities. They include schools without qualified instructors and schools operating from addresses that do not exist.

What to actually do

Search the registry for your school by name before you pay anything, and check it again right before each training session if you can. AAMVA's guidance is blunt about why: a provider's status can change while you are enrolled.

If the provider is not listed, walk away. There is no version of this where unlisted training satisfies the federal requirement.

If your school was already removed

This is the part worth knowing, because it is better news than people assume. Training you completed before a provider was suspended still counts. AAMVA's guidance to DMVs is explicit that certificates from suspended providers are valid if the training occurred before the suspension.

What you cannot do is finish your remaining hours with them. You will need to complete the rest with a provider that is currently listed, and that usually means a conversation about what you already paid for.

Before you enroll at all
