DOT Rolls Out a Pro-Trucker Package, Including Money for Parking

Not all of the recent news out of Washington is about cracking down. This month the Department of Transportation put out what it is calling a pro-trucker package, and a few pieces of it are things drivers have been asking for over years.

Parking, finally

The headline item is truck parking. Anyone who has spent the last hour of a shift circling for a legal spot knows how bad the shortage is. The package puts real money toward building more parking capacity.

Less red tape

The rest is about getting out of drivers' way. DOT says it wants to drop one-size-fits-all mandates that do not fit how the job actually works, modernize the resources drivers deal with, and cut down on paperwork.

There are not a lot of hard deadlines attached yet, so the proof will be in how this gets funded and rolled out over the next year. Still, after a stretch of news that has been mostly about tighter rules, it is a different note, and the parking piece could make a real difference day to day.
